Public Talk: Awareness & Mindfulness.
Mindfulness has become fashionable in recent years, even extending beyond the boundaries of institutional Buddhism. The Buddha spoke of sati, literally “memory,” and placed this quality at the centre of his approach to meditation practice. The pioneer translator of early Buddhist texts, T. W. Rhys-Davids (1843-1922), was responsible for translating “sati” as “mindfulness.” Tonight we will explore what the Buddha means by mindfulness, and to do that we will begin with awareness. After all, any meditation practice centres on our relationship with awareness, and if we are to approach the practice of mindfulness we do so through awareness.
