Public Talk Friday 11th July: Awarenesss & Mindfulness – 7pm by donation at the door. Awareness & Mindfulness. Mindfulness has become fashionable in recent years, even extending beyond the boundaries of institutional Buddhism. The Buddha spoke of sati, literally “memory,” and placed this quality at the centre of his approach to meditation practice. The pioneer translator of early Buddhist texts, T. W. Rhys-Davids (1843-1922), was responsible for translating “sati” as “mindfulness.” Tonight we will explore what the Buddha means by mindfulness, and to do that we will begin with awareness. After all, any meditation practice centres on our relationship with awareness, and if we are to approach the practice of mindfulness we do so through awareness.
Saturday 12th and Sunday13th July: Exploring Mindfulness. In this workshop we will explore mindfulness and its practice, based on the Buddha’s teaching. We will assume no previous meditation experience, so this workshop is designed for beginners. However, experienced practitioners will beneifit rom revising their understanding of the fundamental principles of the practice. Meditation is a craft that anyone can learn through appropriate training. We will build a basic skill set that will establish you in your practice or strengthen your existing practice. We will begin with mindfulness immersed in body which the Buddha sees as foundational for mindfulness practice. Participants should wear loose and comfortable clothing, suitable for yoga/bodywork.
Times: Saturday and Sunday: 8.45am for prompt 9am start. Finish 5pm Saturday and 4.30pm Sunday. Out of respect for the Teacher and the other participants, please do not be late.
Cost for the weekend is: Members $120 and Non Members $140 includes vegetarian lunch and refreshments both days. Bookings essential on Trybooking link: https://www.trybooking.com/CZGNJ
About Patrick: Patrick has practised mindfulness meditation (satipatthana vipassana) since 1977. At that time there was little or no Buddhist meditation training available in Australia, so he spent years travelling in Asia and the USA working with teachers from different Buddhist traditions to learn the craft of meditation practice. Most of his training has been in the insight meditation lineage of Maha Sayadaw of Myanmar, which included several years as a Buddhist monk, and he has also trained in the Diamond Sangha lineage of Zen.
