SUMMARY:Patrick Kearney - Weekend Retreat on Serenity and Insight - 29th to 31st May
DESCRIPTION:Public talk 7pm: Serenity and insight – this talk is the introduction to the weekend teachings.\nThe Friday Public talk is the beginning of the weekend teachings and is included in the cost for those attending the weekend.  The talk\, however\, is open to the general public and you are welcome to attend by donation.   \nPatrick will begin the retreat with this introductory talk and then guide us to explore serenity and insight\, the two essential wings of the practice. Serenity calms the heart. Insight clarifies the mind. What does the Buddha mean by these terms? Are we talking about two different projects? What kinds of practice emerge from serenity and insight? Tonight we will introduce and discuss how the Buddha’s teaching on serenity and insight frames our practice.  These teachings are suitable for both beginners and experienced meditators. \nWorkshop Saturday 30th from 8.45am for 9am start till 5pm and Sunday 31st May 8.45am to 4.30pm  \nOn serenity and insight\nThe Buddha divides practice into the two frameworks of serenity and insight. Serenity (samatha) can also be translated as “calm abiding.” We  need our hearts to be calm and our minds clear if we are to be able to gain insight. Serenity calms and soothes the heart. Insight (vipassanā) is what we see and understand once our hearts are calmed and our minds are clear. \nIn this workshop we will explore both serenity and insight. On Saturday we will emphasise serenity. On Sunday we will emphasise insight. While these are separate projects\, yet they are intimately entwined. \nCost for the weekend includes light vegetarian lunch and refreshments: $ 120 member/concession $140 non members\nBook early to avoid disappointment\, bookings essential on: https://www.trybooking.com/DIMKA \nPlease bring sarong/towel for chair or cushion\, comfortable clothing and reminder only lidded water bottles/cups in the Gompa.  Please be on time out of respect for the teacher and fellow participants and do not attend if you are sick or unwell.  Much gratitude. \nPatrick Kearney teaches retreats\, workshops and classes around Australia and abroad. He teaches both the techniques of meditation and the theory that underlies them.  You can find out more on his website: https://patrickkearney.net/
